Teaching Assistant / Midday Meals Supervisor

Main Purpose:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join our wonderful primary school. We are a happy, nurturing school looking to support someone to enhance their skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute the overall ethos, work and aims of the school

• Liaise with teaching staff to assess and provide particular support to targeted pupils to raise achievements and enable them to overcome barriers to learning.

• Provide learning activities for individuals and groups of pupils under the professional direction of the class teacher, differentiating and adapting learning programmes the suit the needs of allocated pupils.

• Assess, record and report on development, progress and attainment as agreed with the teacher.

• Monitor and record pupil responses and learning achievements, drawing any problems which cannot be resolved to the attention of the teacher.

• Plan and evaluate specialist learning activities with the teacher, writing reports and records as required

• Select and adapt appropriate resources/methods to facilitate agreed learning activities

• Support pupils in social and emotional well-being, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate

• Provide specialist support to pupils with special educational needs, for example, learning, behavioural, communication, social, sensory or physical difficulties

• Provide specialist support to pupils where English is not their first language

• Provide specialist support to gifted and talented pupils

• Provide specialist support to all pupils in a particular learning area (e.g. ICT, literacy, numeracy, National Curriculum subject).

• Supervise pupils on educational and out of school activities

• Guide and support pupils in their personal, emotional and social development.

• Prepare and present displays

• Supervise individual and groups of pupils throughout the day, including supervision in the classroom, playground and dining areas.

• Assist with pupil’s eating, dressing and hygiene as required, whilst encouraging independence.

• Be involved in planning, organising and implementing individual development plans for pupils, including attendance at and contribution to, reviews.

• Work with pupils not working to the normal timetable.

• Support first aid and medical needs

Safeguarding

• Work in line with statutory guidance (e.g. Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent) and our safeguarding and child protection policies

• Work with the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) to promote the best interests of the pupils, including sharing concerns where necessary.

• Promote the safeguarding of all pupils in the school

Essential Criteria

• Good standard of English and Maths (GCSE grade C/4 or above, or equivalent)

• Ability to support pupils with a range of learning needs

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Patient, caring and approachable nature

• Ability to work effectively as part of a team

• Good behaviour management skills

• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities

• Reliable, organised and able to use initiative

• Commitment to supporting children’s learning, wellbeing and development

Desirable Criteria

• Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school

• Experience supporting children with SEND, including ASD, ADHD or speech and language needs

• Knowledge of phonics schemes and early reading support

• Experience delivering small group interventions

• First aid qualification

• Confidence using classroom technology and educational software

• Willingness to contribute to extracurricular activities and wider school life
